Your Claude usage limit, tracked live
Claude limits you on a 5-hour session window and weekly caps at the same time. tokenkarma shows exactly how much of each you have used and when it resets, so you never get stopped mid-task again.
Your session limit resets every five hours, per Anthropic's official documentation. Your weekly limits reset at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account and does not move, whatever day you subscribed. Claude shows both reset times in Settings under Usage; tokenkarma shows them live, before you need to go looking.
How Claude's usage limits work
Every paid Claude plan runs two kinds of limits in parallel. You can be fine on one and blocked by the other, which is why the cutoff so often feels random. It is not: it is two clocks ticking at different speeds.
The 5-hour session window
All your usage inside a 5-hour window draws from one shared session budget, and that budget "will reset every five hours" in Anthropic's own words. Heavy turns drain it faster: Opus, long context, big attachments and extended thinking all cost more per message. Anthropic does not publish per-message numbers, because consumption depends on what each message actually makes the model do.
The weekly caps
On top of the session window, weekly limits cap your total usage. Pro has one weekly limit across all models. Max plans have two: one across all models, and a second one that Anthropic's Max page currently scopes to Sonnet models. Unlike the session window, weekly limits are not rolling: they reset at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, and "your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude", per the same page.
Claude Code spends the same budget
If you use Claude Code on a Pro or Max plan, it does not get its own allowance: Anthropic confirms that usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop "counts towards the same usage limit". An afternoon of agent-driven coding can quietly consume the evening's chat capacity. The good news: on May 6, 2026 Anthropic doubled Claude Code's five-hour rate limits for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, and removed the peak-hours limit reduction on Claude Code for Pro and Max accounts.
Claude plans and their limits, side by side
Anthropic publishes relative capacity rather than message counts. Here is what each plan officially gives you; every cell links to the page it comes from.
| Plan | Session capacity (official) | Weekly limits | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | "Limited", for occasional use; no published numbers | Not documented | Choose a plan |
| Pro ($20/mo) | "At least five times the usage per session" vs Free, during peak hours | One weekly cap, all models | Pro plan |
| Max 5x ($100/mo) | "5 times more usage per session than the Pro plan" | Two weekly caps (all models + Sonnet-scoped) | Max plan |
| Max 20x ($200/mo) | "20 times more usage per session than the Pro plan" | Two weekly caps (all models + Sonnet-scoped) | Max plan |
| Team Standard ($25/mo, $20 annual) | "1.25x more usage per session than the Pro plan", per member | Weekly limits per member | Team plan |
| Team Premium ($125/mo, $100 annual) | "6.25x more usage per session than the Pro plan", per member | Two weekly caps, like Max | Team plan |
Prices are Anthropic's published US prices as of June 2026 and can change. The hour-count estimates that circulate online ("40 to 80 hours of Sonnet per week" and similar) do not appear on any current official page, so we do not repeat them here.
When you hit the wall: official overage options
Hitting a limit no longer just means waiting. Anthropic now offers two documented ways to keep going, both strictly opt-in:
- Usage credits: pay-as-you-go usage billed at standard API rates once your plan windows are exhausted, with a monthly spend cap you set yourself (official details).
- Usage bundles: prepaid credits at up to 30 percent off, applied only after your included limits run out (official details).
Both make tracking more valuable, not less: overage is exactly where an invisible limit turns into a visible bill. Knowing where your windows stand tells you whether to wait for the reset, buy credits, or move the task to another model.
Reset cheat sheet
| Limit | Window | Resets |
|---|---|---|
| Session | 5 hours | Every five hours |
| Weekly (all models) | 7 days | Fixed day and time, assigned to your account |
| Second weekly cap (Max, Team Premium) | 7 days | Same fixed-schedule mechanics, separate counter |
Where to check: in Claude, Settings then Usage shows your current session and when your weekly limits reset (Anthropic's own guidance). That works, but it is a settings page you have to remember to open. tokenkarma keeps the same numbers in your menu bar.

How to see your Claude usage
Claude warns you late by design: a notice when you are close to the cap, a settings page if you go looking. tokenkarma closes that gap. For the session and weekly windows it shows:
- the percentage used and how much is left, per window,
- the exact time each window resets,
- alerts at 75 and 90 percent, before you hit the wall,
- your usage next to every other AI you pay for.

Track Claude next to every other AI you pay for
Most people who pay for Claude also pay for ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor or Perplexity, each with its own limits and its own blind spots. tokenkarma puts them all in one view, so you can move work to whichever model still has room. See the full AI usage tracker or the side-by-side limit comparison.
Frequently asked questions
What are Claude’s usage limits?
Claude enforces two kinds of limits at once. A session limit on a 5-hour window that, per Anthropic’s Pro plan page, "will reset every five hours". And weekly limits: Pro has one weekly cap across all models, while Max plans have two, one across all models and a second one that Anthropic’s Max page currently scopes to Sonnet models. Anthropic does not publish exact message counts, because usage varies with the model, message length, attachments and extended thinking.
When does my Claude limit reset?
The session limit resets every five hours. The weekly limits reset at a fixed time each week assigned to your account: per Anthropic’s documentation, "your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude". You can see both reset times in Claude’s Settings under Usage, or live in tokenkarma without opening settings at all.
Why did I hit my Claude limit so fast?
Heavy turns burn the window faster: Opus, long conversations, large attachments and extended thinking all consume more of your session budget per message. Claude Code counts against the same subscription windows as the chat, so an afternoon of agent coding eats the same budget. Anthropic also frames plan capacity around demand: its Pro page describes session capacity "during peak hours", so what you get can vary with load.
Do Claude Code and claude.ai share the same limit?
Yes. Anthropic states that usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop "counts towards the same usage limit" (source). One shared budget, several doors into it. That is exactly why a tracker helps: the chat will not tell you what your coding session just spent.
Can I buy more Claude usage when I hit a limit?
Can I track my Claude usage in real time?
Yes. tokenkarma reads your live Claude usage and shows the percentage used and the reset time for the session and weekly windows, with alerts before you hit the wall. It runs as a Mac menu-bar app, a web dashboard and a Chrome extension. For Claude alone, our free claudeKarma extension does it from your toolbar today.
Is tokenkarma affiliated with Anthropic?
No. tokenkarma is independent and not affiliated with Anthropic. The limits described here reflect Anthropic’s published information as of June 2026, every number links to its official source, and the mechanics can change.
