Claude Max vs Ultra: which limit counts for you
On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed its two top Claude plans. Max 5x is now Max, Max 20x is now Ultra, at the same prices, and subscribers were moved over automatically. The limits changed too, and the bar that stops you is not the same on each plan.

Which limit stops you
- On Max, both the 5-hour limit and the weekly limit apply. A long session can stop at the 5-hour mark even with weekly room left.
- On a verified Ultra account there is no 5-hour limit: the weekly limit is the one that counts.
- On both plans, Fable has its own weekly limit. You can hit it while your Claude weekly limit still has room.
Is my Ultra account verified?
Open Claude, Settings > Usage. If there is no "Current session" bar, your account is verified and has no 5-hour limit. Anthropic verifies accounts automatically.
Free limit resets
Anthropic now offers free limit resets from time to time. When one is available, "Reset for free" appears in Settings > Usage and resets either the 5-hour limit or the weekly limit. A weekly reset does not move your usual reset day. Resets are not available in Claude Code or on mobile.
Max or Ultra?
If you hit the 5-hour limit during long sessions, Ultra removes it once your account is verified. If the weekly limit is what stops you, compare Max's 5x Pro with Ultra's 10x Pro per week.
