Fable 5 is metered now.
Here is what changed.
- Until July 7, 2026 Fable 5 was included in paid Claude plans, up to 50% of your weekly usage limits.
- Since July 7 Every Fable 5 prompt bills usage credits: $10 per million input tokens, $50 per million output tokens. Twice the Opus 4.8 rate, on top of your plan.
- When credits run out Fable 5 access stops mid-session. No automatic fallback to a cheaper model.
Anthropic frames the change as temporary, "when sufficient capacity allows", with no timeline. Facts as published by Anthropic, July 2026.
Anthropic's only spend control is a monthly cap. tokenkarma blocks the Claude Code spend per session, per day or per week, before the prompt runs.
What "metered" means in practice
Through July 7, a paid Claude plan covered Fable 5 up to 50% of your weekly usage limits: heavy, but bounded by the plan you already paid for. Since July 7 that inclusion is gone. Fable 5 now draws on usage credits, a separate metered balance billed at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, twice the Opus 4.8 rate.
The number is not abstract. In BleepingComputer's hands-on test, Fable 5 exhausted a $100 Max plan's daily usage in 9 minutes of agent-mode work. On usage credits, that same appetite bills dollars instead of draining a window, and a long session or an overnight agent loop keeps billing whether you are watching or not.
And when the credit balance hits zero, Fable 5 does not degrade gracefully: access stops mid-session, with no automatic fallback to a cheaper model. You find out at the exact moment you are in the middle of something.
Anthropic caps it monthly. You can block it per session.
Anthropic's spend controls on usage credits are account-wide and monthly: a spending cap, auto-reload, alerts. Nothing per session, per day or per week. tokenkarma adds the missing granularity for Claude Code, where the heaviest Fable 5 spend lives: one command caps this session's extra usage, counted from now, and the prompt that would cross the line is blocked before it spends.

Blocked before it spends. Resend the same prompt to pass anyway. You stay in charge.
Anthropic controls as documented in Anthropic’s own support articles on extra usage and spending limits, verified July 2026.
Seeing is free: every plan gets the protection panel and the live extra-usage burn. The caps themselves are an Expert feature. The daily gesture and the full command family are on the /tokenkarma command page; the full comparison table is on the cap page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Fable 5 still included in Claude plans?
No. Since July 7, 2026, Fable 5 is not included in any Claude plan’s usage limits. Every Fable 5 prompt draws on usage credits, a metered balance billed on top of your subscription at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
What are Anthropic usage credits?
A prepaid balance on your Claude account, billed at standard API rates. Since July 7 they are the only way to use Fable 5 on a subscription. When the balance runs out, Fable 5 access stops mid-session, with no automatic fallback to a cheaper model.
Is the change permanent?
Anthropic frames it as temporary: Fable 5 will return to subscription limits "when sufficient capacity allows", with no timeline given. The terms changed three times in June 2026 alone, so treat any specific date you read as provisional.
How fast does Fable 5 spend?
Fable 5 is priced at twice the Opus 4.8 rate. In BleepingComputer’s hands-on test, Fable 5 exhausted a $100 Max plan’s daily usage in 9 minutes. Agent workflows multiply that: long sessions and background loops keep spending while you are not looking.
Can I cap what Fable 5 spends?
Anthropic offers one control: a monthly spending cap on usage credits. tokenkarma caps Claude Code extra usage per session, per day or per week, and blocks the prompt before it spends. Type /tokenkarma 20 and this session stops at $20.
